More About Steven Holtz
A Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®) is a financial professional with extensive knowledge of the life insurance industry and the underwriting process. In most states, a CLU® designation exempts you from pre-licensing education and underwriting certification requirements. This means a CLU® has obtained a level of life insurance expertise that exceeds general insurance and basic life insurance underwriting requirements.
A CLU® certification gives advisors:
- In-depth knowledge of the life insurance industry underwriting process and life insurance law within the guidelines of overall risk assessment
- The necessary knowledge to help clients and investors address their estate planning needs
- An understanding of personal finance solutions addressing the life insurance underwriting needs of business owners and professionals
To become a CLU, participants must complete coursework and exams in life insurance and estate planning. Participating advisors are also required to have worked full-time in the industry for at least three of the last five years and follow strict ethical standards. Once completed, advisors become insurance experts with the ability to help clients make decisions regarding estate planning, wills and trusts.
The American College is the exclusive institution that graduates financial advisors to become chartered life underwriters. The certification has actually been around since the 1920s.
A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) is a type of financial advisor who possesses one of the most rigorous certifications for financial planning knowledge. CFPs must have several years of experience related to financial planning, pass the CFP exam and adhere to a strict ethical standard as set by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.
CFPs, unlike some other types of financial advisors, are held to a fiduciary standard, meaning they are obligated to act in their client’s best interest.
